Evan Mulvihill's first pathetic attempt at an apology

After D. Evan Mulvihill wrote his column, he (not surprisingly) got a lot of negative feedback. His response was an "apology". I say that in quotes because this is what he wrote as part of that bullshit apology:

"I wrote the satirical fake news article intending to exhaust the full spectrum of stereotypes about Asians. It was also an April Fools' Day joke. It was intended to be so, so over-the-top that it might come across as not tasteless. In the end, I think if I had used only the positive stereotypes of Asians instead of the others (poor pronounciation, higher suicide rates, etc) then it might not have been such a flop.

I personally am close friends with many Asians, and don't have any prejudgments about them. I know that as a whole Asians tend to be more studious which is what the article was supposed to harp on: the funniness that an Asian community center would be built right next to the library.

I'm glad that you would like to hear my side, because I think the discussions about racists and racism usually amounts to the"oppressed" group sitting together and whining about how oppressed they are instead of actually seeing what other people perceive their group."

***********************
Holy fucking shit. I can't believe D. Evan Mulvihill is so stupid and clueless. Let's take a closer look at his extremely defensive "apology".

1. "I wrote the satirical fake news article intending to exhaust the full spectrum of stereotypes about Asians....It was intended to be so, so over-the-top that it might come across as not tasteless."
I'm not sure what the hell D. Evan Mulvihill means by "exhaust the full spectrum". Certainly, he pulled out as many old and false stereotypes as his idiotic racist brain could recall. In that sense, he succeeded. Congrats, Evan, you proved your encyclopedic knowledge of racist stereotypes is second to none. But if Evan thinks that by trotting out all those old racist hobgoblins of narrow-minded minds, he would somehow help end them ("exhaust" them), well, that's just moronic. Ever since Jonathan Swift wrote his famous satirical piece "A Modest Proposal", generations of lesser minds have claimed to be using satire when they're really just indulging their baser natures.
See, here's the thing, Evan. Swift's "Modest proposal" is satirical because the spirit of the article basically invites the reader to detest the author's desire to eat poor Irish children and to have compassion for the poor Irish. Swift was genuinely critical of the prevailing attitude amongst the English ruling class towards the Irish. He sets up a strawman (the "author") who completely embodies the callous and indifferent attitude that Swift detested in order to drive home the message that the strawman's morals and beliefs were wrong. Therein lies the critical difference. But now let's take a look at what motivated Evan's pathetic attempt.

2.) "the article was supposed to harp on: the funniness that an Asian community center would be built right next to the library."
Hmmm....so instead of trying to deflate the model-minority myth, Evan's first motivation was to draw attention to it. "Oh, look at the nerdy Asians having their velly own community center next to the riblerry." Having boldly tackled one Asian stereotype, Evan decides to use his platform to ridicule the fact that there have been numerous student suicides at Cornell (and the fact that Asian and Asian-American students represent a disproportionately high percentage of such suicides) because after all, what's funnier than students killing themselves?

3.) "I personally am close friends with many Asians, and don’t have any prejudgments about them."
Oh, right. The ol' "My best friend is an Asian/black/Hispanic/[insert other minority group]". Gosh, well that's so open-minded of you, Evan Mulvihill. You deign to come into contact with them Asians, so obviously you're not a racist. Never mind that your article completely denigrates your "friends" ethnicity and heritage. Hey, what's a little racism amongst friends, eh?

4.) "I think the discussions about racists and racism usually amounts to the “oppressed” group sitting together and whining about how oppressed they are instead of actually seeing what other people perceive their group"
Oh, no, you did not just say that. Evan, tell me you didn't write that.

No, wait. You did. Of course you did. Because that's what you genuinely believe and feel. It's all the fault of them uppity minori-tees, gosh durn it. It's them minori-tees who just sit around and "whine" about everything. Maybe if they actually took the time to see how (not "what", Evan, "how". Idiot.) other people perceive their group, it would be a better world for us non-colored folks. Sheesh...the ingratitude of those people.

So tell us, Evan. How do you perceive Asians? Because from what I can tell from your writing, you do believe in the stereotypes. The inability to tell "L" from "R", the penchant for eating cats and dogs at every meal, the sucky-sucky-fi'-dolla'-me-ruv-you-rong-time hooker...that's what you see whenever one of them squinty-eyed minori-tees passes by, isn't it?

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://evanmulvihill.blogspot.com/2008/04/after-d.html' title='D. I am not that student. I did not write the column that shows up below nor do I endorse it. I created this blog to publicize D. Evan Mulvihill's (Cornell Class of '09) stupidity and racist attitude.

Here's what D. Evan Mulvihill wrote for his column:

Asian Community Center to be Built Adjacent to Uris Library

President David Skorton announced the plans for the construction of an Asian Community Center at a midday press conference today. The building is to be located directly adjacent to Uris Library on the Clocktower Side, and will be designed by the famous architect I. M. Pei.

"I believe that this building will dramatically reduce the amount ofAsian suicides at Cornell," Skorton announced. "We also plan to fillin the gorges with those chewy bubble tea orbs so that distraught students will have to rely on other methods."

Among the centers many features are the Pokemon Card Trading Arena, the Mi-So Slipi Lounge equipped with 100 beds for study break naps, and one-seater dining areas with calculators built into the tables. Many students are most excited, however, about the center's Lucky Sun Moon Restaurant, which features MSG, beef with broccoli, and cat-fish casserole, which incorporates not catfish but a mixture of cat and flounder.

"Our plans were substantially modified after meeting with the Asian and Asian-American community," said architect I. M. Pei. "The original plans called for an underground parking lot, but it was scrapped based on the projected amount of parking mishaps. That was something I did not foresee, perhaps because of my squinty eyes."

Most Asian students jumped for joy upon hearing the news. Student Mi-So Honee remarked, "Is so close to libelly!"

Other students were appreciative that the name was changed from the Little Rice Room Place.

"Besides being a sirry name, I couldn't rearry pronounce arr those R and Ls," said Henry Joon-Kimyung-Jook."
